Young Carers

Being a young carer
You’re a young carer if you’re under 18 and help to look after a relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or substance misuse issues.
If you’re a young carer, you probably look after one of your parents or care for a brother or sister, a close family friend or other relative. You do not have to live in the same home as the person you care for to be a young carer.
A young carer may undertake some or all of the following:
Practical tasks: cooking, housework, shopping
Physical care: lifting, helping up the stairs
Personal care: dressing, washing, toileting needs
Household management: paying bills, managing finances,
Looking after siblings: putting to bed, walking to school
Supervision of medication
Emotional support: listening, calming
At St Margaret’s CEVA Primary School we are committed to ensure that young carers receive the support that they need. Identifying a child with a young carer’s role at the earliest possible opportunity enables us to provide the right support.
Through our years of experience and training and working with different children and families, we are often able to recognise children who may be providing care within their families.
With your permission, we can complete an Early Help Assessment (EHA) to request an assessment. This will be completed with you and it cannot be submitted without your consent.
If you think that any of the above applies to your child, and that they may be a young carer, please contact Ms Robinson (Young Carers Lead and Headteacher) via the school office: 01935 822686 or by email: office@stmargaretsceva.com
Even if you feel your child or family are doing really well and don’t need any support, we find that it’s better for us to be aware and have them on our radar as potential young carers, in case the situation suddenly changes, and they (or you) do need support.
