History
Intent
At St Margaret’s we teach the children to think and ask questions like historians, so they have a good understanding of the chronology of British history and that of the wider world.
Implementation
History is taught across the school on a rolling programme to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum within mixed age classes. Our units of work begin with placing events on a timeline so the children understand the chronology of this period and what is happening in the wider world at the same time.
Within the Early Years and Key Stage we look at historical events within our lifetimes and those of our family as well as those in our local area. Whilst following the National Curriculum, we make sure that it is relevant to our children and the area in which they live.
In Key Stage 2 we look at both British History and events from the wider world. We alwyas look at how the two are linked, what differences and similarities there were at these time periods.
Throughout the school we encourage the children to question and investigate. We ask them to share their ideas, using evidence from a range of sources as justification.
Impact
The learning environment across the school is more consistent with historical technical vocabulary displayed, spoken and used by all learners. Displays present examples of children’s work as well as key learning concepts.
As historians our children are able to:
Think critically
Ask questions
Weigh arguments
Make judgements
Discuss significant historic events which has had an impact on their life.
